Crowd Sourcing Your Collection Management Plan
Collection management plans are an important part of the job of a school media specialist, but it’s often a document created and filed away never to be looked at until it is time to create a new one. My presentation and active work time provides the steps and documents necessary to use the stakeholders in the building to develop and manage a collection thats meets the academic needs of the students in the building. The focus is on the non-fiction print and digital resources not on building literacy with the fiction collection. Participants will walk away with the documents for each step along the way.

Creating Hungry Readers with Voice and Choice
The kids who love reading and crave books are easy. But what about those other kids, the ones who want the computer, the bathroom, the comfy chairs...but not the books? How can we get them to want to read?

I was a juvenile delinquent. Good books, and the teachers and librarians who hooked me up with them, gave me the ladder up and out to my dream life. I know what struggling kids need because I was one. Throw in my extensive training in adolescent literacy, and the process of writing award-winning YA books, and I've got strategies to share.

In Creating Hungry Readers with Voice and Choice, I'll break down exactly how to turn resistant readers into book addicts: meet them where they're at, amplify their voice, and always give them choice. In this session, I'll serve up a gut punch of a lesson, showing attendees how to turn their worst-behaved patrons into living, breathing book fanatics. The session will include modeling of exactly how to teach reading to low-level adolescent readers, and a handout including a breakdown of the strategies.

Graphic Novels in Our Libraries: A Conversation
The popularity of graphic novels with students has been well-documented, but graphic novel reading continues to carry a social stigma in the eyes of parents, teachers, and even some librarians. In this interactive discussion, we’ll talk about our own feelings about and familiarity with graphic novels. And whether we are passionate graphic novel fans or skeptics, we’ll delve into how our perceptions of graphic novels might inform our collection and categorization practices. Finally, we will share ideas for growing great graphic novel collections, educating others in our professional circles about their value, and advocating for access to these materials for the youth we serve.

Genrefying isn't Gentrifying: Curating an Accessible Collection
Have you considered genrefying your collection? After pondering it for 5+ years, I took the plunge this spring! Last year's NCSLMA Conference panel presentation from Appalachian persuaded me genrefying was feasible.

During this session we'll discuss genres, print and digital labels, the library catalog, physical space, and keeping students and staff updated on changes in finding materials.

Learn how I got student and staff input and feedback, supported the School Improvement Plan, and combined inventory/genrefying to help curate a collection that is even more student-friendly and accessible to readers who want to browse, as well as readers who have to grab a book for a class project.

Resources will include genre descriptions and labels, Follett's information about "Flipping a Library to Genre Organization" and more (including signage explaining Genrefying isn't Gentrifying - it's the opposite!)
