The kids who love reading and crave books are easy. But what about those other kids, the ones who want the computer, the bathroom, the comfy chairs...but not the books? How can we get them to want to read?

I was a juvenile delinquent. Good books, and the teachers and librarians who hooked me up with them, gave me the ladder up and out to my dream life. I know what struggling kids need because I was one. Throw in my extensive training in adolescent literacy, and the process of writing award-winning YA books, and I've got strategies to share.

In Creating Hungry Readers with Voice and Choice, I'll break down exactly how to turn resistant readers into book addicts: meet them where they're at, amplify their voice, and always give them choice. In this session, I'll serve up a gut punch of a lesson, showing attendees how to turn their worst-behaved patrons into living, breathing book fanatics. The session will include modeling of exactly how to teach reading to low-level adolescent readers, and a handout including a breakdown of the strategies.
